What is Emotion Regulation?
Processes involved in initiating, maintaining, and altering emotional responses.
- Down-regulating = limiting
- Up-regulating = amping-up
What are the 2 ways parents can deal with emotions?
Emotion coaching or Emotion dismissing
What is emotional coaching?
- Being aware of even low intensity emotions
- Opportunities for closeness and teaching
- Accepting and empathising
- Helping to understand and express
- Helping to deal with situation/trigger
What is Emotion dismissing?
- Ignoring, denying, criticizing or punishing negative emotions
- Trying to convert them to positive as quickly as possible
- Not dealing with emotions
