English as a Second Language (ESL)
English instrution for immigrants to English-speaking countries or for citizens of countries where English was widely used as a second language (L2)
English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
English instruction in countries where English has no official internal use (i.e., it is taught as an academic subject in school)
English as an International Language (EIL)
English instrution as a language of wider communication purposes in many areas of life (e.g., international diplomacy, business, science, education, and entertainment)
World Englishes
regionally distinct varieties of English spoken in different areas of the world
lingua franca
the language used for communication among speakers who lack a common L1
Inner circle of English
the countries and regions where English is the native language of the majority (e.g., United States, United Kingdom)
Outer circle of English
countries where English has had a long history of use and where local L2 varieties have developed and become codified through extensive use (e.g., India, Singapore)
Expanding circle of English
countries where English is a dominant foreign language used in limited domains but is starting to become or has become a lingua franca (e.g., China, Russia)
mutually intelligibility
a relationship between languages or dialects in which speakers of different but related varieties can readily understand each other without prior familiarity or special effort
code-switching
the use of two varieties at the same time in discourse
English as a lingua franca (ELF)
use of the English language as a global means of inter-community communication
comity
the efforts that interlocutors make to maintain good relations with fellow ELF interlocutors
