NHMRC Ethical Principles in Research (4 components)

Purpose of NHMRC Ethical Principles in Research.
To promote ethically good human research
Participants treated with the respect and protection that is due to them
fostering of research that is of benefit to the community
(Relationship od trust, mutual responsibility and ethical equality)
Principle 1: Respect
common thread through all the discussions of ethical values.
Recognition that everyone has value, this value must inform all interaction between people
recog value of human autonomy => consent is needed and the choice of redrawing should be available throughout the exp.

Respect for human beings is:
a) recognise of their intrinsic value, abid the other 3 Ethical principles,
b) Respect the privacy, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity and community (when needed). Any agreements made has to be fulfilled
c) Give due scope to the capacity of human beings to make their own decisions
d) participants with diminished cap: empower them when possible and provide them protection when necessary
Research Integrity and Merit
Research to have merit and researchers have integrity, research must be ethically justifiable:
Research is said to have merit if … … (6)
1) has justifiable potential benefit
2) designed/developed using methods appropriate for achieving the aims of the proposal
3) well backed by previous lit & studies;
4) respect for participants not compromised by the aim, procedure or results of research
5) well conducted: competence, exp, qualified
6) facilities and resources appropriate for research.
Research is conducted with integrity when researchers hAVE a commitment to:
1) search for knowledge and understanding
2) follow recognised principles of research conduct.
3) conduct research honestly
4) disseminate & communicate results in ways that permit scrutiny and contribute to public knowledge and understanding
Justice (2 types)
Distributive justice:
fair distribution od the benefits and burdens of research
procedural justice:
fair treatment in the recruitment of participants and review of research
just means and involve no unjust burdens
Beneficence
/assessing and taking account of the risk of harm and potential benefits
sensitivity to welfare and interests of ppl
