W2L1 - Packet Switching and Queue Flashcards
Full Mesh Network
Expensive to run a link between all nodes
Very failure resistant
Ring Network
Cheaper
Not failure resistant
Switched network
Cheaper uses shared links
Decent failure resiliency through alternate paths
What type of network does the internet use?
Packet switched network
Circuit Switching
Connection oriented: end nodes must set up exclusive connection
Guarantees bandwidth and latency
Each link can only be used by one pair of nodes at a time
The oath of connection cannot be moved once established
No circuit available to connect far away nodes
Packet Switching
Connectionless: each packet is independent Unreliably reliable (Because of protocols)
What parts of a network can have queues
Intermediate nodes, Routers, Switches
What are queues?
Congestion - To many packets - causing delay and loss
Packets will be dropped when queue is full
