W20 Reproduction Flashcards
Where in the testis does spermatogenesis occur?
Seminiferous tubules
What is spermatogenesis? When does it occur?
Proliferation of a spermatogonium (stem cell) to spermatozoon (stem cell)
Occurs during puberty!
Outline how spermatogenesis occurs
From one Spermatogonium: mitosis into Primary spermatocytes
Meiosis 1 into Secondary,
Meiosis 2 into 4x spermatids
What is spermiogenesis?
When spermatids proliferate into spermatozoon
What is the epidydmis?
Reservoir for sperm
Sperm undergoes further maturation
What is the role of sertoli cells?
Produces enzymes + GH for spermatogenesis
What is the function of Leydig cells?
Secrete testosterone in response to LH/FSH
when puberty starts
Outline the steps of oocyte maturation
Oogonia -> Primary oocyte -> Primordial follice –> Puberty –> Primary foillicle (w/ primary oocyte) –> Secondary follicle –> Graafian follice (secondary oocyte)
What is the roles of the hormone in maturation of ooginia?
FSH stimulates proliferation of follicular cells
Summarise the menstrual cycle as 3 stages
Follicular phase, Day 1-14:
Ant. Pit. release FSH, follicles mature, estrogen is produced
Ovulation phase (Day 14) Rise in estrogen causes pituitary to release LH = the LH surge, OVULATION occurs
Luteal phase:
Graafian follicle becomes corpus luteum, starts producing progesterone
