W2 Consultation - Directions, cavity classification, cavity walls Flashcards
I. Directions and surfaces of teeth
1. What are the 5 main surfaces and directions of the teeth?
- Facial/ Vestibular
- Oral
- Incisal
- Occlusal
- Proximal
I. Directions and surfaces of teeth
2. Describe the facial/ vestibular surfaces
- Facial/ Vestibular - The surface that faces the cheeks or lips (vestibulum oris)
- Two subtypes
- Labial: the surface towards the lips - Anterior teeth
- Buccal - the surface towards the cheeks - Posterior teeth
I. Directions and surfaces of teeth
3. Describe the oral surface
- Oral surface: the surface that faces the oral cavity (cavum oris proprium).
- Can also use the terms:
– Palatal – The surface that faces the palate. – Upper teeth
– Lingual – The surface that faces the tongue. – Lower teeth
I. Directions and surfaces of teeth
4. Describe the Incisal surface
The biting edge of an anterior tooth.
I. Directions and surfaces of teeth
5. Describe the occlusal surface
The chewing surface of posterior teeth.
I. Directions and surfaces of teeth
6. Describe the proximal surface
Proximal – Tooth surfaces that are next to each other (i.e., distal of lateral incisor and mesial of canine).
– Mesial – The surface that is closest to the midline of the face.
– Distal – The surface that is away from the midline of the face.
I. Directions and surfaces of teeth
7. What are the Surfaces of anterior teeth?
4+1edge:
* Labial/facial/vestibular
* Mesial/mesioaproximal
* Oral/palatal or lingual
* Distal/distoaproximal
- Incisal edge
I. Directions and surfaces of teeth
8. What are the Surfaces of posterior teeth?
5 edges:
* Buccal/facial/vestibular
* Mesial/mesioaproximal
* Oral/palatal or oral/lingual
* Distal/distoaproximal
* Occlusal

II. Caries/ cavity classification
1. How many dental caries/ cavity classes are there?
6 classes
II. Caries/ cavity classification
2. Describe class I of caries/ cavity classification
Class 1 (I) lesions occur in pit and fissures on the facial, lingual and occlusal surfaces of molar and premolars,and, lesss often, the palatalsurface of maxillary anterior teeth (most frequently lateral incisor, less frequently central incisor, rarely canines.)
II. Caries/ cavity classification
3. Describe class II of caries/ cavity classification
- Class 2 (II) lesion occurs on the proximal surfaces of the posterior teeth (molars and premolars). Smooth surface caries.
- Types:
- Mesial side is involved – MO cavity
- Distal side is involved – OD cavity
- Both proximal sides are involved – MOD cavity
II. Caries/ cavity classification
4. Describe class 3 of caries/ cavity classification
- Class 3 (III) lesion occur on the proximal surface of anterior teeth (central and lateral incisors and canine.
- Class 3 cavities do NOT involve an incisal edge!
II. Caries/ cavity classification
5. Describe class 4 of caries/ cavity classification
- Class 4 (IV) lesion occur on the proximal surface of anterior teeth when the incisal angle requires restorartion.
- The angle may have to be removed because of its fragility or for proper placement of the restoration, or it may have been fractured by trauma.
II. Caries/ cavity classification
6. Describe class 5 of caries/ cavity classification
- Class 5 (V) lesion occur on smooth facial/vestibular and lingual/oral surfaces in the gingival third of teeth.
- Class 5 cavities begin close to the gingiva and may involve a cementum or dentinal surface as well as the enamel.
II. Caries/ cavity classification
7. Describe class 6 of caries/ cavity classification
Class 6 (VI) lesion are pit or wear defects on the incisal edges of anterior teeth or the cusp tips of posterior teeth.
III. Walls of cavities
1. Definition of the wall of cavity
A preparation takes the name of the involved tooth suface(s)
III. Walls of cavities
2. Which types of walls do we have?
Internal and external walls
III. Walls of cavities
3. List internal walls
– Axial wall – parallel to the long axis of the tooth
– Pulpal wall – perpendicular of the long axis of the tooth
III. Walls of cavities
4. List external walls
– Mesial / Distal / Proximal wall
– Facial / vestibular / buccal / labial wall
– Lingual / palatal / oral wall
– Gingival
– Incisal / Occlusal wall – (Class 3 and Class 5 cavities)
III. Walls of cavities
5. Which walls are included in class 1 cavity?
III. Walls of cavities
6. Which walls are included in class 2 cavity?
III. Walls of cavities
7. Which walls are included in class 3 cavity?
III. Walls of cavities
8. Which walls are included in class 4 cavity?
III. Walls of cavities
9. Which walls are included in class 5 cavity?
IV. Steps of cavity preparation
1. What are the 2 stages of cavity preparation?
- Initial tooth preparation stage
- Final tooth preparation stage
IV. Steps of cavity preparation
2. What are the 4 steps of Initial tooth preparation stage?
– Step 1: Initial depth and outline form
– Step 2: Primary resistance form
– Step 3: Primary retention form
– Step 4: Convenience form
IV. Steps of cavity preparation
3. What are the next 5 steps of Final tooth preparation stage?
– Step 5: Removal of defective restorative material and/or soft dentin
– Step 6: Pulp protection
– Step 7: Secondary resistance and retention form
– Step 8: External wall finishing
– Step 9: Final procedures: depridement and inspection
