What does OSHA stand for?
Occupational Safety and Health Act
What is OHSA?
federal law requiring private-sector employers to keep their workplaces free from hazards that threaten the safety and health of employees. Eliminate or lessen hazards.
What are the 3 agencies of OSHA?
-Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)
-Occupational Safety & Health Review Commission (OSHRC)
-National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH)
What does the OSHA agency handle?
overall administration and enforcement of the act.
-establishes safety standards
-conduct inspections
-provides info to employers
What does the OSHRC agency handle?
hears appeals from OSHA’s enforcement actions
What does the NIOSH agency handle?
provides scientific and technical support to OSHA
-helps identify hazards and develop appropriate standards

General Duty Clause
provides that each employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees.

To prove a violation of the General Duty Clause, OSHA must show all of the following:
- a workplace hazard was allowed to exist
-hazard was or should have been recognized by employer
-hazard caused or was likely to cause death or serious physical injury
