Relative poverty?
Generally having sufficient abilities to meet survival necessities but lacking the minimum income to maintain the avg standard of living in their society. (= compromised QoL)
Normally above international poverty line but below the national poverty line
Eg in London living on minimum wage
Causes of global poverty?
Lack of education Politics (corrupt) Population growth Natural disasters Location (lack of natural resources) Climate (92% of Africa have insufficient rainfall) War World depressions
Compassion?
The ability that humans have to be affected by the suffering of others and wanting to care or help them
Stewardship?
The responsibility to look after the world and everything in it, esp those poorer than us
Justice?
The idea poor people have the right to be treated fairly (ie sharing wealth)
Benefits/examples of fair trade?
Helping LEDC farmers to get directly into the world market (as their profits can go up by 3-4x)
Workers rights are supported
Develops farmer’s business skills (sustainability)
Environment protected
Empowers communities
Consumers are certain they’re supporting a verified product
How fair trade works?
Products can be checked back to where they were manufactured through traceability and accountability
Examples of unfair trade
Slave labour Low wages Long hours Extortionate profit making Child labour
Sustainable development?
Development that’ll be long lasting and not limited by time/money/environmental issues. Example = teaching skills
Long term aid?
Aid which is long lasting and designed to continue without total external support. Usually a project involving local communities in education and skills (eg building medical centre)
short term aid?
Needed after a sudden disaster. Often food or medical help to provide short term relief. eg in 2000 Mosambique floods; water, food and blankets were provided
What can religious believers do to combat world poverty?
Pray for wealth distribution Donate to charities like DEC Travel to countries to deliever aid educate others about wealth distribution and equality Buy fair trade products
Absolute poverty?
Living below the international poverty line and therefore not having sufficient abilities to attain all the basic needs to survive
What is a fair wage?
Appropriate pay for the time, effort and skill given to the job
Minimum wage?
The lowest hourly rate that it is legal for an employer to pay employees
Eg in Britain it is £6.70 for over 25s
