Q

Christian teachings on wealth?

A

Matthew 19:24 = ‘it is easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God’ (rich man will be too attached to wealth to live a virtuous life)
Timothy 6:6-9 = ‘those who want to get rich fall info temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction’
Timothy 6:10 = ‘the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil’
Proverbs 23:4 = ‘do not wear yourself out to get rich, have the wisdom to show restraint’
Matthew 6:19-21 = ‘do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth (…) but store up yourselves treasures in heaven’ (wealth is transient with no lasting value)

Q

Why is national lottery (and gambling) bad?

A

Glorifies chance rather than God (we should have trust in him rather than luck)
Runs against stewardship (everything belongs to God and we’ve been entrusted with it : gambling involves needlessly risking what belongs to God)
Gambling glorifies self interest (one seeks to profit from other’s losses: a spirit of self interest= selfish and against Matthew 22:39)
Fuels human covetousness (7 deadly sins eg envy)
