Vygotsky's social development theory Flashcards
Key to cognitive development
is social interaction; social learning precedes development; cultural differences
Children develop
as they interact with physical and social environment; through these interactions, children internalize new ways of behaving and thinking; environment will influence how children think and what they think about; stages unfold due to educational intervention
More Knowledgeable Other
someone who has a better understanding or higher skill level than the learner, with regard to a particular task, concept or process; social interaction involving collaborative/cooperative dialogue promotes cognitive development;
Zone of Proximal Development
difference/distance between what a child can learn/achieve independently and what child can learn/achieve with guidance and encouragement from a skilled partner; learning occurs in this zone; as children become more competent, they do more on their own
scaffolding
MKO helps to structure/organize a task so that a novice can work on it more successfully
