Vygotsky Flashcards
Vygotsky’s theory
The role that adults and other children play on a child’s development
Zone of actual/proximal development
The gap between what a child is currently able to do (their zone of actual development) and what they would do with support e.g. tie a shoelace
Vygotsky and language
There are 2 functions of language:
1. External speech, used in front of others
2. Inner speech, used for thinking
Sustained shared thinking
Early years settings now encourage adults and children to talk during play and activities as this supports the children to explore ideas, problem solve and work collaboratively. E.g. cooking together
Apprentice learning
How a child learns a new skill by observing an adult whilst they are carrying out a task
Guided participation
When the adult works collaboratively with the child to complete a task or solve a problem. The adult helps with the task and encourages the child to think about what they are doing
