Vygotskis Theory Flashcards
Vygotskis theory of..
Cognitive development
Overview of vygotskis theory
vygotskis believes: influences within our culture are the key driving force for the development of cognition and the ability is a result of social contexts
How to vygotskis and Paigets views differ
Both agree that we learn as we grow how we vygotskis believes this is due to culture and social context
What is elementary
Are the functions we are born with eg memory
What are higher mental functions
Are the influence of our culture building abilities
The role of others experts
The role of other cultures is learning from someone that is more knowledgable in an area than our own suggesting we are constantly learning from out environment
The role of language
The role of language differs depending on the person we communicate with eg speaking with clear pronunciations to a child can be beneficial for their intellectual development
What is the zone of proximal development
An area where a child is best able to learn new information
This area is in the centre of where we can do all the tests and tasks become overly difficult
Scaffolding
Middle ring where children can learn with some assistance eg modelling, maintaining attention and simplifying
Processs
Elementary functions lead to cultural differences lead to higher mental functioning
Similarities of vygotskis and Paigets theories
- they both be,Ives qualitative differences between children’s cogntions as they grow
- both believe biological factors play a role
- children learn as they grow
Differences between paiget and vygotskis
- different biological factors: maturation vs elementary factors
- paiget believes in very set stages whilst vygotskis believes in ongoing process
- individuals vs social process
4 evaluation points
Strength - real world application
Weakness - differing views
Strength - research support
Weakness - methodology
Elaboration strength - real world application
- useful for education
- scaffolding has helped teachers develop strategies for all learners
- van Kerr and vernahaege found 7 year olds who were tutored by 10 year olds learned more than those than peers with just teaching
Elaboration weakness - differing views
- correct about importance in other people of learning
- if he was right about process of interactive learning we would expect all children learning together to pick up similar skills and mental representations
- howe found what children learn actually varies considerably between individuals
- paiget said learning experiences lead to the formation of an individual mental representation of the topic
