Paigets Stages Flashcards
Paigets stages are
Stages of intellectual development
How many stages are there
4
Name of first stage
Sensorimotor stage
Age of sensorimotor stage
0-2
Key features of sensorimotor stage
Development of object performance which is the understanding that objects and people do still exist when they can’t be seen
What happens at 8months
Children understand things still exist when they are out of sight
The second stage is
Pre-operational stage
Age of pre-operational stage
2-7
Feature of pre-operational stage
Children’s logic can’t be used to explain how things work in the real world - they can’t perform logical reasoning and rely on what they see
Example of what a child believes in pre-operational stage
Most things are alive eg teddy or table
Supportive evidence from pre - operational stage
The conservation of volume, mass and number task
Paigets three mountain task
Third stage
Concrete operational stage
Age of concrete operational stage
7-11
Key features of concrete operational stage
- children have developed ability to use logic
- however they lack abstract reasoning
Last stage
Formal operational stage
Age of formal operational stage
Age 11+
Key features formal operational stage
- abstract thinking
- allowing us to think more like scientists and ‘idealistic thinking’ by using our imaginations to think of how things might be if we make more changes
Description of conservation of volume
The ability to realise the quantity of an object stays the same even when the appearance of an object changes
Description of the three mountains task
Us used to assess visual perspective taking in children
- a doll is placed at various locations around 3 dimensional display of three mountains, children must indicate how the doll sees the display
What does three mountains task show
A child can only appreciate their own perspective
4 evaluation of Paigets stages
- cultural bias
- good application to real world
- supportive evidence
- conclusions about conservation research is flawed
Elaboration strength - supportive evidence
- support of pre operational stage
- three mountains task and conservation of mass/ volume
Elaboration of weakness - cultural bias
- focused on middle class European background bc he was from there and studied people there
- in other classes, cultures greater volume placed on eg more basic level of concrete thinking rather than logical operations
- isn’t universally applicable
Elaboration strength - application to real world
- suggests children aren’t biologically ready to be taught certain concepts until they reach a certain age
- eg teaching pre operational children maths would be tricky
- plowden report 1967 drew on these conclusions leading to major changes in primary school education
Elaboration weakness - conclusions about conservations in research is flawed
- children taking part in Paigets conservation studies may have been influenced by seeing experimenter change
- mc garnigle and Donaldson set up study where counters appeared to be moved by accident and found children ages 4-6 child conserve as long as they weren’t being put off
