VTE Prevention Flashcards
What is VTE?
Venous thrombo-embolism
Risk factors for VTE
Immobility Surgery Obesity Cancer Trauma
What is Vircow’s triad?
Blood flow - stasis of blood
Blood contents - hypercoaguability
Vessel walls - injury
What are the general measures for VTE prevention?
Limit starvation
Adequate hydration
Care during postitioning
Early mobilisation
What are the intra-operative methods of VTE prevention?
TED stockings
Flowtron boots
What are TED stockings?
Compression stockings
- prevent pooling of blood in calves
What are some downsides to TED stockings?
Poor fit - can act as a tourniquet
Contra-indications for TED stockings?
Peripheral vascular disease
Open wound
Rash
What are flowtron boots?
Intermittent pneumatic compression device
What is intermittent pneumatic compression?
Device inflates and deflates in cycles
Compresses calf, to stimulate blood flow
Downside to flowtron boots
Requires patient to be immobile
What is the autar scale?
Tool for indentifying risk of DVT in orthopaedic patients
