Vriend States of Matter 1 Flashcards
What are the 4 states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma
A substance with a definite volume and no definite shape is known as a
Liquid
A substance with no definite volume and no definite shape is known as a
Gas
A substance with a definite volume and a definite shape is known as a
Solid
What is thermal energy?
Heat
Does “a phase change” have the same meaning as “a change in the state of matter”?
Yes, a phase change from a solid to a liquid has the same meaning as a solid changing its state of matter to a liquid.
When thermal energy increases in a substance, what will happen to kinetic energy, temperature, and particle movement?
They will all increase. A pot of water heating on the stove. The temperature increases as the kinetic energy increases causing the particles in the water to move faster.
What will happen to a solid if thermal energy is added to it?
It will heat up and change from a solid phase to a liquid phase. Particles will loosen up and begin to slide over each other.
What will happen to a liquid if thermal energy is added to it?
It will heat up and change from a liquid phase to a gas phase. Particles will spread further and further apart getting more and more excited and bouncing off of each other.
What will happen to a gas if thermal energy is added to it?
The particles will become more excited, move farther apart and stay a gas.
