VPN (P1) Flashcards
VPN broad definition
Technology that allows you to create a safe and encrypted connection between your device and the internet, allowing for compete anonymity and data protection.
2 important aspect of a VPN and brief outline
- Tunneling: The process of creating a secure virtual tunnel between two devices where the data is transmitted
- Encryption: Within the tunnel, the data is encrypted and upon arrival, decrypted to extract the data
How does a VPN work? Explain using concepts like VPN server, ISP, devices, VPN client
To use a VPN, a VPN client is required — software that grants access to a VPN by establishing a remote, encrypted connection to a VPN server. When the VPN is active, your device’s internet traffic is encrypted and sent through your ISP’s network, meaning it cannot be understood by them, to the VPN server. From there, the VPN server forwards the traffic to its final destination on the internet. During this process, you’re assigned a new IP address by the VPN, which is the one visible to websites and online services — effectively masking your real IP address.
