VPA Test revision Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell?
Multi-cellular
Has a nucleus and other other membrane bound organelles, each organelle is specialized for a different function
What is a prokaryotic cell?
single cell organism
prokaryote means ‘before the nucleus’ because they lack a membrane bound nucleus or any other membrane organelles.
What is the formula for magnification.
Magnification = Image size / Actual size
What are the positives of light microscopes?
- You can look at living organisms
- Cheaper than electron microscopes
- easy to use
What are the negatives of light microscopes?
- You can’t zoom in as much (low magnification and resolution.)
What is the function of the midpiece of a human sperm cell.
mitochondria gives the sperm energy to help it move.
What is gram staining?
To identify bacteria as being gram positive or gram negative.
what are the positives of and electron microscope
- High resolution and magnification
- You can see smaller specimens
What is the function of the plasmodesmata ?
Transport and communication between plant cells
What are the negatives of an electron microscope?
- specialised
- non-living organisms
- Very large
- Costly
- ## high maintenance
