Diffusion Flashcards
What are 3 factors of diffusion
- Temperature
- Distance
- Amount of particles
What is dynamic equilibrium
Dynamic equilibrium is where 2 things are working at the same rate and there is no change. But there is a change
How does temperature affect the rate of diffusion
The higher the temp the quicker diffusion will take place,
The slower the temp the longer diffusion will take place.
How does distance affect the rate of diffusion
The longer the distance the slower the diffusion will take place.
The shorter the distance the quicker diffusion will take place.
How does concentration gradient affect the rate of diffusion
The greater the distance in concentration, the more rapid the diffusion. If the medium is less dense, diffusion increases.
How does surface area affect the rate of diffusion?
- The larger the surface area, the amount of particles inside the cell increases because there is more room for particles
- The smaller the surface area, the amount of particles decreases because there is less room for the particles.
How does the size and the shape of the molecules affect the rate of diffusion
If the size of a cell increases it will be more difficult (all other things being the equal) for diffusion to transport materials out of the cell. The reason for this is because of the change in the surface to area ratio of the cell. Change in surface : Area
