Volume 1, Unit 6 Flashcards
Why is it important to have a clean container to catch the oil when checking the main oil filter for contamination?
A dirty container could give a false indication of contamination
When engine is sent to the engine shop with a new discrepancy, what should you do before you begin corrective action?
First review the aircraft and engine forms; second perform a FOD check of the compressor section; and third remove the main oil filter and inspect for oil contamination
Why should a preliminary inspection of the engine be performed prior to correcting a known discrepancy?
To ensure an unknown discrepancy doesn’t slip by while the engine is undergoing maintenance for a known discrepancy
What are possible consequences of a dirty work area?
Contamination and subsequent engine failures
How are hints on maintenance procedures highlighted in maintenance manuals?
In the form of captions such as notes, cautions, and warnings
Why should you never stack engine parts with precision finishes on concrete floors?
Marring and nicking would lead to Cracks in the metal and leaks of exhaust gases during engine operation
Before you prepare an engine for air shipment, what precaution do you take for engine fuel&oil systems?
Make sure all residual fluids are drained from the engine lubricating and fuel system
What precautions should be taken during air shipment of engines attached to trailers, trucks, stands, or in containers?
Properly torque bolts, Screws, and nuts used in securing engines and provide them with approved locking device. Also, check in the pneumatic tires for condition and proper inflation
What is the most common shipping container for components?
Cardboard box
A flexible environmental container can be used for what type of shipment?
Air and surface transportation
What type of cover is opened by using a zipper?
A prefabricated cover
Which manual covers reporting an engine that was improperly shipped?
AFMAN 24–204
What types of inspections are performed on engines after they’re involved mishaps or dropped?
Visual inspections and tests cell functional test
If an engine was dropped en route and an inspection revealed only minor damage to the engine, which level of maintenance would do the repair work?
Intermediate maintenance shop
How is dehydration accomplished in a metal shipping container?
By installation of predetermined amounts of bagged dehydrating agent and by pressurizing with dry nitrogen
How does the flexible environmental container differ from metal containers?
They do not provide mechanical and physical protection and are used in conjunction with transportation trailers and adapters
Empty storage and shipping containers should be pressurized to what pressure?
5+ or -1 pounds per square inch gauge
What warning is found in all engine module storage and shipping containers?
Caution: release pressure before opening container
Where is the filler valve located?
On the front end of the container
What could happen if you remove the lid from a storage and shipping container without releasing the internal pressure?
Damage to the container or injury to the workers
What direction are the turn-lock fasteners turned when removing the lid?
Counterclockwise
After the lid is removed from the container, where should be placed?
On wooden blocks
Which end of the engine is placed over the front of the container?
Aft end
What is the purpose of the wire basket located in the bottom half of the shipping container?
It holds the desiccant
Why is the serial number on both halves of the shipping container particularly important?
Both halved of the container must be kept together since they are matched set
