What is volleyball?

A

A team sport played by twelve players, of which six are on the field and can be substituted every set

How is the playing field?

A

It has 6 imaginary zones where players locate (3 are the attack area and the other 3 are the defense area) on each side of the centre line where there is also the net. The service area is behind the baseline

How long is the match?

A

It has 5 sets, so therefore, there is no fixed lenght. To win a set, a team has to score 25 points with at least a 2-point advantage except when there’s a tie in the fifth set and then it would be just 15 points

How do you score points?

A

A team scores a point when the ball touches the ground in the opposing team’s area, the ball is hit outside the playing area after it’s touched by a member of the opposing team or when any foul in the rules is committed

Which are the rules?

A

The ball can be played with any part of your body and out of bounds (if it touches a line it is considered in the bounds). You can serve from anywhere behind the baseline and if it hits the net and goes through it is still valid.

Which are the fouls?

A

Four touches or two touches per player, a team can’t touch the ball four times and a single player can’t touch the ball twice. Holding the ball or blocking or spiking a served ball is also penalized. The players can’t enter the opponents’ play area or touch the net.

A

They have to rotate clockwise direction.

How do you do the forearm pass?

A

You have to position yourself behind the ball with your legs slightly bent and intercept the ball with the surface fo your arms with a light hit.

How do you do the hanging pass?

A

It’s a variant of the forearm or the finger pass but jumping, it’s used when te ball is very high or long.

How do you do the finger pass?

A

You have to keep your fingers slighthly bent facing the ball and making an imaginary triangle and your legs bent so that, when you get the ball, straighten your legs and arms to give impulse.

How do you do the back-set?

A

It’s a finger pass but the ball is hit over the player’s head and the shoulders move back to pass the ball to the player behind.

How do you do the spike?

A

Approach a high ball with a couple of steps and then jump with both feet to spike it with your hand coming forward from the ear and shifting the weight to give it strength and speed.

A

Extend the arms upwards and jumping high to intercept the spike.

A

How do you do the dig?

A

It’s used to save the ball when it’s far from the player, to gain centimetres needed to reach the ball.

How do you start the game?

A

You do the serve which can be low or high. The low serve consists on hitting the ball with the palm of your hand or the inside of your wrist. The high serve consists on throwing the ball up vertically and extending the arm that was behind the neck to hit the ball at the highest point possible.

How is a complete and logical sequence of play?

A

A team serving, then the other recieves the ball with a forearm hit, and the setter directs the ball to the position of the spike

How many players can play volleyball?

A

3x3 (an attacker, a passer and a defender), 4x4 (two players in front and two in the back) and 6x6 (the standard)

Which are the types of attack systems?

A

The setting in turn and the specialist system

How is the setting in turn?

A

It’s when the player in zone 3 is the setter and the others are defenders and passers

How is the specialist system?

A

One or two players are the passers and the others spike or someone can be a defender, called ‘libero’ wearing a different colour shirt.

Which are the types of defence systems?

A

The most common is the 3-1-2 but there are others such as 3-2-1 or 3-3. The W defence system is used to reacieve the serve and 5 players are placed in form of a W.
