Volleyball
A sport played by two teams on a court with a net, where the objective is to ground the ball on the other team’s side of the court.
History of Volleyball
It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and originally called Mintonette.
Volleyball court
The playing area is a rectangle divided into two equal courts by a net.
Court measurements
18 meters long and 9 meters wide.
Net
The barrier that separates the two sides of the court.
Ball
A spherical object used to play the game.
Other equipment
Kneepads, ankle braces, and shoes designed for indoor court sports.
Rally
When both teams are playing the ball back and forth over the net.
Volleyball common terms
Ace, dig, spike, block, kill, side-out, points, serve, pass, rotation.
Service
The act of putting the ball into play at the beginning of a rally.
Warm-up sessions
Time before the match starts to stretch, practice hitting, and get ready for the game.
Attack hit
A hit intended to make the ball go over the net and land on the opponent’s court.
Position fault
When a team’s players are not arranged in the proper position on the court before serving.
Rational fault
When a team’s players rotate out of order before the serve.
four-hit foul
When a team hits the ball more than four times before sending it over the net.
