Volcanos Flashcards
What is a volcano
A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planets surface of crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from below the surface
How many types of volcano are there
There a 3 different types of volcano. Geographers call the categories active, dormant and extinct
What is an active volcano
An active volcano is liable to erupt at any time e.g. Mt Etna
What is a dormant volcano
A dormant has not erupted for many years. E.g. Mt Pinatubo erupted in 1991 after 500 years of dormancy
What is an extinct volcano
An extinct volcano has not erupted for a very long time and is unlikely to erupt again e.g. Mt Kulal in Kenya
List the first benefit of living near a volcano
About 44% of icelands total energy comes from geothermal energy where boiling underground water, heated by the hot rocks deep below the surface, produces steam which can be used to generate electricity
List the second benefit of living near a volcano
Over 120 mostly open-air swimming pools are heated by the naturally occurring hot water
List the third benefit of living near a volcano
Greenhouses producing, tomatoes, cucumbers and flowers are heated using geothermal energy
