Why did this earthquake happen

A

The exact cause of the quake on the 14th of November 2016 is not yet clear. But the US Geological Survey says it was a result of an “oblique-reverse” fault. That occurs when two plates are moving towards one another, and after enough tension is built up, one slips up over the other, releasing the tension.

It left thousands stranded and cut off: Kaikoura, a town of about 2000 people, in the north island, had been almost completely isolated with roads closed and phone lines down. There was a state of emergency in place for the town
