Volcanoes n Earthquakes Flashcards
What is a volcano?
An opening in the earth’s crust through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases escape
What is a earthquake?
the shaking of the ground caused by sudden movement in the earth’s crust
What is depth of focus?
the distance underground (how deep) the earthquake starts
What is the crater?
the circular depression at the top of the magma
What is the secondary vent?
space through which magma reaches the surface through passing through the main vent
What is the lava?
molten rock after it reaches the surface
What is ash?
cloud which is pushed out of the volcano
What is the main vent?
the tube that connects magma chamber to the surface
what is the magma?
molten rock underneath the ground
what is the magma chamber?
store of underground magma
What are composite volcanoes
Composite volcanoes are composed of different materials and are found in destructive boundaries
What are sheild volcanoes
Shield volcanoes are usually found at constructive boundaries over hot spots
features of the composite volcanoes:
height: tall in height
base: short base
slope: steep slopes
lava: high gas pressure and explosive
destruction: explosive
plate boundary: destructive
features of sheild volcanoes:
height: short
base: wide base
slope: gentle slope
lava: thin basaltic lava
destruction: basaltic
plate boundary: constructive
