Volcanoes and Earthquakes Flashcards
Focus -
The focus is the place inside Earth’s crust where an earthquake originates
Epicentre -
the point on the Earth’s surface direcrly above the focus
Magnitude -
The measure of the total amount of energy an earthquake has
Intensity -
A measure of the impacts of the earthquake on the surface
Momentum Magnitude Scale -
a scale of measurements for the magnitude of an earthquake
Mercalli Scale -
a scale of measurements of the intensity of an earthquake
Short term relief -
provides immediate support during or after a disaster (eg food, medicines, shelter)
Long term relief -
the improvement and management of impacts and hazards ovre a long period of time
Primary impact -
impacts occur immediately as the earthquakes happen
Secondary impacts -
impacts of the effects that occur directly as a result of this earthquake
P waves
‘Primary waves’ is the first type of seismic wave produced by an earthquake. They travel faster than other waves and are not destructive
S waves
‘Secondary waves’ is the second type of waves produced by an earthquake. They are slower than P waves but are much more destructive.
Early warning system -
multiple devices or systems triggered by seismic waves to alert people threatened by a hazard to act timely and appropriately
Counterweight -
a methode to negate the effects of an earthquake, counterweight is a weight that, by exerting an opposite force, provides balance and stability of a structure
