Volcanoes Flashcards
1
Q
What is the difference between lava and magma?
A
- lava is molten rock that flows on the surface of the earth.
- magma is melted rock that is under the surface of the earth.
2
Q
What are the three types of volcano(With examples)
A
- Active – live volcano which erupts regularly (Mount Saint Helen’s)
- Dormant– Sleeping volcano which hasn’t arrived for a long time, but may again. (Cotopaxi, Peru)
- extinct – this volcano has died out, it is very unlikely to erupt again. (Slemish Mt)

Q
Name three disadvantages of volcanoes
A
- they can cause destruction to buildings and transport. Flowing lava burns everything in its path.
- Ash Clouds cause problems for air-traffic, because it can damage engines. Into thousand 10, asked for a volcano in Iceland cause the biggest air-traffic shut down since World War II.
- poisonous gasses come out of volcanoes e.g.C02 from them can I harm people and the environment
4
Q
Name five advantages of volcanoes
A
- tourism: Volcanoes off and attract tourists because they’re off and beautiful and exciting places.
- Fertile soil: Sawyer and volcanoes are rich in minerals and I good for growing crops. The land around Mount Vesuvius in Italy is used for farming
- energy: the heat from volcanoes can create electricity. This is called geothermal power.
- new land: The lava from the volcano can build up to create new land when it cools.
- mining: viable minerals, e.g.gold, can be found near volcanoes.
5
Q
Name the parts of a volcano
A
- magma chamber.
- vent pipe.
- Crater.
- layers of cool lava that form a cone shape.
6
Q
Explain how mid ocean ridges occur.
A
Mid ocean ridges occur when plates separate on the ocean floor to form a volcano.
7
