What are minerals?
Naturally occurring solid materials, when one or more stick together a rock is formed.
Name and briefly explain the three categories of rocks
Igneous– Made from lava or magma.
Sedimentary – formed from particles/sediments.
Metamorphic – made from other rocks.
How is basalt made?
Lava cools above ground.
How is granite made?
Magma cools underground
Name 2 differences between Basalt and Granite
- Basalt is fine grained while Granite is coarse grained.
- Basalt is black or dark grey and Granite is commonly a light grey.
- Basalt is used for road-building and Granite is used to headstones.
What minerals are in Basalt and where can it be found?
The minerals are feldspar and quarts, Giants Causeway in Antrim
What minerals are in granite and where can it be found?
Quartz, Mica And feldspar, County Wicklow
What are common sediments of sedimentary rocks?
Remains of rocks, plants and Dead sea life
What are rocks?
Rocks are the hard material that form part of the earths crust. the main ingredient and rocks is minerals.
