Volcanoes Flashcards
What is destructive plate margin?
In plate tectonics a region in which two plates are moving toward each other
What is a volcano?
A crack in the earths crust through which hot magma and gases well up the magma becomes know as lava when it reaches the surface
What is a vent?
A hole in a volcano through which magma or hot gases rise
What is magma?
Molten rock under the earths crust
What is lahar?
A fast moving cloud of super hot gases, ash and debris
What is pyroclastic flow?
Mudflow formed from a mixture of water and volcanic ash
What is landslide?
Sudden downwards movement of a mass of soil or rocks from a cliff or steep slope
What is friction?
A process where heat is created when two things rub together
What is an earthquake?
Shaking of the earths surface as a result of the sudden release of stresses built up in the earths crust
What is the Richter scale?
A scale use to measure the magnitude of an earthquake
What is lava?
Molten rock on the surface
What are two environmental benefits of living near a volcano?
Lava and materials from pyroclastic flow make the soil around rich in minerals therefore they have good crops to sell
Geothermal energy can be taken from the volcano, by using the steam to drive turbines it produces electricity which helps the environment because you aren’t using fossil fuels
What are two economical benefits to living near a volcano?
Volcanoes attract millions of visitors from around the world every year which creates jobs as tour guides
They contain some of the most mineral rich soils which produces healthy crops and rich harvests which helps the place to make money
What are two social disadvantages to living near a volcano?
When the volcano erupts there is a massive decrease in the amount of people living on that area of land because the volcano has killed many people
The ash and gases will pollute the water which means there will be a shortage of drinking water
What are two economical disadvantages of living near a volcano?
The ash and gases in the air will delay air travel therefore there will be no tourists so businesses my have to close due to the lack of money coming in
Once the volcano erupts gases will come out and go into all near by lakes, rivers and reservoir which will kill all fish and sea life this means that there will be no fish to sell to other places meaning there will be and economic downturn
