Volcanoes Flashcards
What is a major cause of volcanic activity?
plate tectonics
What is the name of the bowl-shaped depression at the top of a volcano?
crater
What are the three types of volcanoes?
1.stratovolcano/ composite cone volcano
2.shield volcano
3.cinder cone volcano
What are the three stages volcanoes are typically classified by?
1.active volcanoes
2.dormant volcanoes
3.extinct volcanoes
What is an active volcano?
Active volcanoes are volcanoes that have erupted in the last 10,000 years and are expected to erupt again.
What is a dormant volcano?
It is a volcano that have not erupted and are not showing signs of activity but they can become active again at anytime.
What are extinct volcanoes?
It have no erupted erupted in thousands of years and there is no possibility of future eruptions.
How does a volcano become dormant?
It dormant when it shows no signs of activity beneath the surface.
Thes activities might include earthquakes or release of gases.
What does dormant volcanoes typically look like?
mountains
What are some of the signs that show a volcano is active without eruptions?
earthquakes, smoke rising from the cone or magma on its way to the surface
What are some examples of dormant volcanoes?
Soufriere Hills, Montserat
Soufriére,Saint Vincent
If a dormant volcano releases gases and small earthquakes are recorded, what does this mean?
activity beneath the earth’s sirface
it is showing signs of volcanic activity that can lead into eruption
What are some positive effects of volcanoes ?
create new islands and lands
generate tourism
create beautiful landscapes
create economic mineral deposits
provide habitat to pioneer species
What are some negative effects of volcanoes ?
disrupt commerce
generate tsnumais
displace populations
kill people and animals
destroy old habitats and crops
destroy cities, towns and communities
What is the depth the Earth’s crust varies between
6-18miles and 60-180miles
What does the mantle melt into?
magma
What is a volcano?
It is an openining in the Earth’s surface through which heat and pressure can escape.
How far can volcanic eruptions send ash ?
over 30km (17miles)
Where else can Volcanoes be found?
on the occean floor and under icecaps eg.Iceland
What is the tallest volcano solar system?
Olympus Mons on Mars which is a shield volcano
27km and 550km across
