Volcanoes Flashcards
Where are Volcanoes found
Volcanoes are found primarily along plate margins, especially around the edges of the pacific ocean where they form the ‘Pacific Ring Of Fire)
What volcanoes occur at diverging plate margins
75% of magma reaching the surface does so at these plate margins, Primarily along mid-ocean ridges.
What hazard do divergent volcanoes cause
Eruptions are normally non-violent and due to most of these volcanoes being in the deep ocean they present little hazard to people. The exception is where ocean ridges cross inhabited land such as Iceland
Explain volcanoes at convergent plate margins
80% of active volcanoes are at subduction zones found along convergent plate margins.
What hazards do convergent plate volcanoes have
Eruptions can be violent, proving hazardous to areas of habitation, such as Mt St Helens eruption in the cascade range in 1980
