Volcanoes Flashcards
magma
melted rock inside the Earth
lava
melted rock on the Earth’s surface
volcano
a vent through which lava and pyroclastic material continue to erupt
viscosity
the state of being thick, sticky, and semifluid in consistency
felsic
lava that is rich in feldspar and is highly viscous; it is very “thick” and does not flow easily
mafic
lava that is rich in magnesium and has a low viscosity; this means that it can flow very easily.
hot spot
active centers of volcanic activity. Many are located in the middle of tectonic plates. They are found on both continental and oceanic plates.
crater
a bowl- or funnel-shaped depression that usually lies directly above the vent from which volcanic material is ejected
igneous rock
rock that is formed from cooled magma. It can be intrusive or extrusive
intrusive igneous rock
igneous rock that is formed inside the earth
extrusive igneous rock
igneous rock that is formed outside the earth on the surface
fissure
fracture or crack at the Earth’s surface from which lava erupts
