Understanding Weather Flashcards
cloud
a collection of water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere
evapotranspiration
the process by which water is transferred from the land to the atmosphere by evaporation from the soil and other surfaces and by transpiration from plants.
precipitation
rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground.
condensation
the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid.
evaporation
the process of turning from liquid into vapor.
atmosphere
the layers of gases that surround a planet
water cycle
the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land
troposphere
the lowermost layer of Earth’s atmosphere in which most weather occurs
phase change
a change from one state of matter (solid, liquid, gas) to another without a change in chemical composition
stratus cloud
a low-lying cloud characterized by a thin, layered, sheet-like appearance
saturation
the state at which a solution holds the maximum amount of solute it is capable of dissolving
dew point
the temperature at which water vapor in the air condenses into water
absolute humidity
a measure of the water content of air, expressed as the mass of water for a given volume of air
relative humidity
the ratio of the amount of water in the air to the amount of water the air can hold
adiabatic cooling
occurs when the temperature of an air mass decreases as a result of the expansion of the air mass as it rises
