Volcanoes Flashcards
1
Q
What are volcanoes measured by?
A
Logarithmic scale from 0-8 called volcano explosivity index (VEI) - 1 is gentle, whilst 8 is mega colossal
2
Q
Icelandic volcano features
A
Basaltic magma
Lava flows gently from fissures
Caused by constructive plate boundaries
3
Q
Hawaiian volcano features
A
Basaltic magma
Lava flows gently from a central vent
Caused by magma plumes/hot spots
4
Q
Strombolian volcano features
A
Thicker basaltic magma
Frequent, explosive eruptions of tephra and steam. Occasional, short lava flows.
Destructive plate boundary
5
Q
Vulcanian volcano features
A
Thicker basaltic, andesitic and rhyolitic magma
Less frequent, but more violent eruptions of gases, ash and tephra
