Volcano types Flashcards
what is a volcano?
A volcano is an opening or vent in the earth’s surface through which molten material erupts and solidifies as lava.
different types of volcanoes
Composite volcanoes (also called stratovolcanoes) Fissure volcanoes Hot spot volcanoes shield volcanoes caldera volcanoes
composite volcano
found at destructive plate boundaries Viscous (thick and sticky) magma Slow moving lava after eruption Explosive eruptions Steep sided as layers build up with each eruption
Commonly found around the Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean
fissure volcano
Found at constructive plate boundaries
Plates have separated to leave a rift or fissure
No cone is formed due to runny lava
Examples are found in Iceland and along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
hot spot volcanoes
Are not found at a plate boundary
Occur when the plate moves away from the source of magma
As the oceanic plate moves away from magma chamber, the volcano becomes extinct
Examples are the Hawaiian islands
shield volcano
where two plates move away from one another.
very runny lava
gentle sides as the lava flows for long distances before it solidifies
no layers, as the volcano just consists of lava
less violent eruptions
shorter periods between eruptions
caldera volcano
a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses
forms shortly after the emptying of a magma… sinkhole. Formed through subsidence and collapse rather than an explosion or impact.
