What is bladder outlet obstruction?
Flow of urine out of bladder into urethra impaired because neck of bladder doesn’t open properly during voiding
Why may bladder outlet obstruction occur?
Mechanical blockage - Scar tissue - Bladder stones - Tumours Neuromuscular disorder preventing outlet from functioning
What is the most common cause of bladder outlet obstruction?
Benign prostate hyperplasia
What is benign prostate hyperplasia?
Enlargement of prostate gland
In whom does benign prostate hyperplasia occur?
Men as they grow older
What cluster of symptoms does bladder outlet obstruction produce?
Voiding symptoms
What do voiding symptoms include?
Hesitancy
Straining
Dribbling
What is hesitancy?
Difficulty patient has with initiating urinary stream
What is straining?
Weak and trickling stream due to decreased force during micturition and may need to strain to pass urine
What is dribbling?
Petering out at end of stream
What sensation can incomplete emptying of the bladder lead to?
Fullness in bladder
What can happen to the detrusor muscle as a consequence of bladder outlet obstruction?
Hypertrophied
Irritable
What can a hypertrophied and irritable detrusor muscle cause?
Dysuria
Storage symptoms
Can a person with bladder outlet obstruction present with both storage and voiding symptoms?
Yes
What can happen with a severe blockage?
Damage to ureters and kidneys
