Vision Flashcards
What is vision?
Way we receive and interpret info from enviro
How is light sensed?
Light enters eye
Focused by cornea and lens onto retina = refraction
Retina converts light energy into neuronal impulses
Optic tracts > visual cortex
Where is the visual cortex?
Occipital lobe
What are the cranial nerves directly important for eye function?
Optic nerve Oculomotor nerve Trochlear nerve Abducens nerve Trigeminal nerve Facial nerve
What is the function of the optic nerve?
Transmits optical impulses from retina to visual cortex
Sensory
What is the function of the oculomotor nerve?
Several eye movements
Elevation of eyelids
Parasympathetic innervation to pupil
What is the function of the trochlear nerve?
Some of vertical eye movements
What is the function of the abducens nerve?
Outward horizontal movements of eye
What is the function of the trigeminal nerve?
Sensory innervation of eye
Needed for protective reflexive blinking
What is the function of the facial nerve?
Eyelid closure
Parasympathetic innervation to lacrimal gland
What controls pupillary dilation and constriction?
Dilation = sympathetic Constriction = parasympathetic
What does a clinical assessment of a person’s vision involve?
History - Vision loss in 1/both eyes - Diplopia Acute loss of vision needs urgent medical assessment Ophthalmological exam
What is diplopia?
Double vision
