Voice production Tx Flashcards
What is resonant voice/tone focus?
Goal to produce strong, clear voice with minimal effort
o In past used idea of “optimum pitch”
o Also forward focus, face mask, resonant voice
o gentle open phonation neutral- voice begins with cords barely approximating
o Alternates: lip and tongue trills, glides up/down, SOVT
tx begins with stretching and breathing ex.
/m/ high to low pitch.
feel resonance in face mask.
alternate rhythm, pitch, and conversation.
converts exhaled air into voiced sound.
What is Yawn-sigh?
o Goal is to promote relaxation of vocal tract, then introduce easy voicing with the yawn
o Cant yawn if laryngeal tension
o Includes work with awareness of sound and feeling
yawn widens the pharynx and lowers the larynx
What is Easy Onset, Aspirate Initiation?
o a little air release before voicing prevents adduction of vf o No breath holding! o Can use /h/ contexts to facilitate (softens glottal attack) o Avoid vocal fold contact and force
What is Chewing?
Froeschels, 1952
o Vegetative to voice
o Most clients resist and must be able to justify and need to model!
What is Confidential Voice Therapy?
o For swelling based problems
o Marilyn Monroe type voice: breathy, light, easy (not a whisper!)
o Result is a transitional voice- not end product
o Clinician must be able to model- needs lots of air wastage
o Caution: Hydrate!!
What is Range Expansion and stabilization technique?
o expand vocal space
What is Chant talk?
o uses hum and nasal contexts (like face mask, resonant voice tx); chant removes need for intonational variation- not an end technique
- more relaxed mode of phonation.
- helpful for vocal fatigue.
What is imagery tx?
o may not be physiologically accurate but helps patient (e.g., voice in basement)
What is the accent method?
o Svend Smith, Denmark, 50 years ago
o Stages: supine, sitting, standing, carryover
o Varied length and speed of exhalation
o Add accented beats using abdominal muscles
o Adds voiceless continuants, then voiced
-helps produce a easy voice with relaxed throat.
-used for unilateral vocal fold paralysis.
-reduction in glottal gap
-improed vf vibrations
What is Vocal Function Exercises (VFE)?
o Discussed in Deem and Miller
o Mostly used by professional voice users
- like any other muscles, exercise laryngeal muscles to increase strength, endurance, and coordination.
4 steps: warm-up (/i/ long), stretching (low to high note), contraction (/O/ hi to lo), and adductory power (hold tones long).
What is Dynamic Range?
o Mostly used by professional voice users
o Used after complete VFE
What are indirect behavioral tx approaches?
Vocal hygiene Patient education Hydration Elimination of reflux Voice rest Relaxation and massage
What are direct approaches to behavioral tx?
Biofeedback Increase breath support Chant tx Effor closure (pushing, lifting) Yawn-sigh, easy onset, chewing
What are holistic behavioral tx approaches?
Accent method Resonant voice tx Confidential voice tx Semi occluded vocal tract Vocal function exercises Voice tx bootcamp
what happens with hyperfunction vocal folds?
elevation of larynx increases the adductory force.
