Voice Flashcards
What is tidal volume ?
The amount of air inspired and expired during a typical respiratory cycle
What is dysphonia?
A vocal disorder associated with the misuse, over use, or abuse of the voice
What does it mean to have a hoarse voice?
This means that there is vocal noise and air leakage through the glottis. It is characterized by noise and breathiness.
Why do people sing a musical range when testing voice? What should you note?
Because it assesses pitch range, variation, and efficiency on different notes.
You should note when it sounds the best and least effortful.
What is ventricular phonation?
Using both the false and true vocal folds secondary to excessive tension.
How do you calculate maximum phonation and what’s the purpose of doing so?
The purpose is to assess glottal closure and efficiency. Do this by sustaining vowel /a/ 3x at a comfortable pitch and loudness for as long as possible. You could the longest of the 3 attempts.
What are the norms for maximum phonation? Can you sustain another other vowels?
Children: 10+ seconds
Adults: 15-20
Yes! A, I and u
What is the purpose of calculating the s/z ratio and how do you do it?
It asses the integrity of glottal closure upon phonation. You do this by producing /s/ and then /z/ for as long as you can with out strain and repeat this 3 times. Divide longest s over longest z
What are polyps?
Soft, fluid filled, unilateral. Precipitated by a single event. Broken blood vessel.
Hyperfunctional dysphonia
Refers to excessive laryngeal tension when phonating or during voice production. It is related to shouting, strain, loudness, tension.
Shimmer is?
Instability of amplitude regarding vocal fold vibration.
What is pitch?
Vibration of the vocal folds and how high/low you can go. It depends on the lengthening and shortening of the vocal folds.
What is vocal quality?
Movement or vibration of the vocal folds.
What is harshness?
Characterized by roughness and noise.
What are contact ulcers?
Located on the posterior glottal margins of the vocal folds. Occurs when slamming together the arytenoid cartilages during the production of low-pithed phonation. It can be come organic rather than functional if reflux is involved.
