What is a musical?
A musical form of theatre combining music, songs, spoken dialogue and dance.
The story is communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment.
What needs to be in a musical?
Acting/ dialogue, Dance, Singing
What is a solo?
One instrument or voice. A prominent instrument or voice can be solo even when part of a larger ensemble.
What is a duet?
Two singers or instrumentalists performing together.
What is a chorus?
A large group of singers.
What is an opera?
• Opera’s tell the story entirely through song.
• Opera’s are often sung in other languages (e.g. Italian, French and German) but there are opera’s are in English too.
• Opera’s consist of several acts.
What is an aria?
An aria is a solo song sung in the opera.
What is gospel?
Gospel usually involves a mixed choir singing religious songs in harmony.
What is rapping?
Rhyming lyrics, spoken in time to the beat of the music.
What is unison?
All parts play or sing the same pitch at the same time.
What is harmony?
To play or sing different notes at the same time i.e. the same rhythm and lyrics.
What does accompanied mean?
Other instruments) or voice(s) are supporting the main melody.
What does unaccompanied mean?
When there are no instruments playing in the background.
Unaccompanied singing is called a cappella.
What does syllabic mean?
Syllabic word setting is when a singer sings one note per syllable.
What does Melismatic mean?
Melismatic word setting is when a singer sings more than one note over one syllable.
