Vocabulary Words Week 3 Flashcards
Phonation
the production of speech begins with the sound produced by vocal fold vibration. Phonation is initiated by approximating or adducting the vocal
folds and closing the glottis or opening.
Trachea
A cartilaginous membranous tube by which air moves to and from the lungs.
Speech Breathing
active muscle contraction of both inspiratory and expiratory muscles is needed during speech to prevent all the air from rushing out of the lungs too quickly. example, counting to 30
Epiglottis
the large, leaf-shaped cartilage attached at its lower end to the thyroid cartilage of the larynx, just below the thyroid notch
Uvula
a structure projecting downward
; the uvula is the termination of your velum
Larynx
primary structure of the laryngeal system, is an air valve composed of cartilages, muscles, and other tissue. It is the principal sound generator for speech production and is colloquially known as the “voice box.”
Vocal folds
are attached at the front near the
midline of the thyroid cartilage and at the back to the arytenoid cartilages via the vocal ligament.
Velum
soft palate, located in the pharynx, is an important structure for both speech and swallowing. You can see a portion of your velum by looking into
a well-illuminated bathroom mirror, You will see a structure projecting downward called the uvula; the uvula is the termination of your velum.
Pharyngeal Cavity
a passageway for both air from the nasal cavity and food from the oral cavity, directing air to the larynx (voice box) for breathing and food to the esophagus for digestion
Subglottal Pressure
pressure measured below the level of the vocal folds
