What is De Facto Segregation?
Segregation from social, economic conditions or personal choice.
What is De Jour Segregation?
Segregation that is integrated by the law.
What is Affirmative Action
Policies and practices within government or organization seeking to include a particular group based upon gender, race, sexuality, etc. In places where they may be underrepresented.
What is Compelling Interest
When something is essential or necessary rather than a matter of choice or preference.
Civil Rights
Must be worked for, people actively fight against discrimination.
Civil Liberties
How the government protects us from being infringed on our rights.
Civil Disobidience
The refusal to comply with certain laws or to pay taxes and fines, as a peaceful form of political protest.
Equal Protection Clause
No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law
What is the Due process of Law?
The constitutional requirement that when the federal government acts in such a way that denies a citizen of a life, liberty, or property interest, the person must be given notice, the opportunity to be heard, and a decision by a neutral decision-maker.
Equal Rights Amendment
“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”
Hostile Working Environment
Involves actions, statements, or conditions that unreasonably interfere with the ability of employees to do their jobs.
Quid Pro Quo Harassment
Request or demand sexual favors in return for advancement or employment
Strict Scrutiny
Compelleing interest to justify unequal treatment
Intermediate Scrutiny
A substantial or important governmental interest in a narrowly tailored way or a way that does not substantially burden more speech than necessary.
