Messiah
A savior sent by God to redeem people from the power of sin and everlasting death and to restore them to God’s friendship
Mystery
Refers to God’s infinite incomprehensibility; God is so beyond us, so great, so omnipotent, so loving, so perfect, that the human mind can never totally grasp his infinity
Proto-Evangelium
Means “the first Gospel;” found in Genesis 3:15 when God revealed He would send a Savior to redeem the world from its sins
Covenant
A solemn promise, or agreement, made between two parties; the word means testament
Paschal Mystery
The events involved in our redemption: the passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus
Salvation History
The story of God’s saving actions in human history
Prophet
God’s messengers who called the people (including the kings) back to a proper observance of the Law of Moses
Theotokos
Means “God-bearer,” the church doctrine that claims Mary as the “Mother of God.”
Infancy Narrative
Stories in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke about the early life of Jesus
Emmanuel
Means “God is with us.” Matthew uses Emmanuel to show that God’s promise of deliverance is fulfilled in the birth of Jesus (Is 7:14).
Son of God
In the Old Testament, a title used for angels, kings, and others who had an intimate relationship with God. In the New Testament, through his actions and teachings, the title reveals the divinity of Jesus as the only Son of God.
Son of David
A title for Jesus that indicates his ancestry can be traced back to King David, as foretold in Scripture.
Genealogy
A record or account of the ancestry and descent of a person, family, group, etc.
Epiphany
The feast that celebrates the mystery of Christ’s manifestation as Savior of the world.
Annunciation
The announcement of the birth of Jesus that takes place when the angel Gabriel tells Mary that God has chosen her to be the Mother of The Lord.
