Patriarchy
A system in which men hold more power and privilege than women. Men make the decisions
Structuralist
how social structure and systems influence human behavior
(idea that human behavior can be understood by looking at patterns, rules, and relationships)
Determinism
your actions and life are determined by outside factors. Everything that happens is the result of prior states of affairs
Symbolic Interactionist
When you are interacting with others and change your self concept and values because of the person or people you meet
Microsociology
Deals with people’s daily social interactions, the study of small systems of social behavior
Macrosociology
Studies large scale social systems and populations and how these systems influence human societies
Ideology
An opinion or belief of someone or a group
Forces of production
Combination of human labor power and the means of production which are used to modify raw materials into goods and services.
Ex: Machinery and labor
Marxism
Describes the capitalist system
you don’t have therefore you will never be successful and money
Deviance
The study of behaviors that break social norms and whether is formal or informal
Social Class
People with a similar status in society
Ex: Upperclass and lower class
Functionalism
All aspects of society serve a function and are necessary for the survival of that society
Ex: Family and government
Power
When you have the ability to control peoples actions, behaviors, and beliefs
Ex: Fame and authority
Force
When you push someone to do something
Ex: Peer pressure and Threats
State of Apparatuses
Institutions that spread bourgeois ideology and ensure that the proletariat is in a state of false class consciousness
Ex: The army and government
Marginalization
hen you are treating someone or something badly or when certain groups or people get denied access to areas of society (social exclusion)
Ex:racist and excluding someone cause of their gender
Non-conformity
When someone intentional acts in ways that go against the accepted social norms
Under-socialization
A process in which people are taught how to become members of a society
Neo marxism
A sociological process that focuses on social equality and with those of limited liberty while also talking about freedom within a capitalist society
Resistance
A way of challenging policies, laws, or social norms that are perceived as unjust or oppressive
Ex: LGBTQ social movements and labor unions organizing strikes against unfair
Social identity
Peoples self-categorizations in relation to their group memberships
Working class
A type of class who typically have low-paying and low-skill labor jobs
Upper class
A type of class that has the greatest wealth paying jobs and have the most power out of all classes
Middle class
Type of class that is in between middle and working class. Not to rich but not to poor
Cultural deprivation
A theory that says that lower class people are more culturally deprived compared to those from higher classes
Age cohort
A group of people born in the same generation
