Vocabulary Flashcards
Abiotic
The non living things in an ecosystem
Food web
A model that shows how food chains link together
Producer
An organism that uses an outside source, such as the sun, and produces its own food
Sustainability
The property of biological systems that remain diverse and productive indefinitely
Niche
The way a species interacts with abiotic and biotic factors to obtain food, find shelter, and fufill other needs (what does the organism do in its environment)
Limiting factor
A factor that can limit the growth of a population
Long term env. change
Env. Change that occurs over a long period of time and affects organisms over generations
Short term env. Change
Env. Change that occurs quickly and affects organisms immediately
Predator-prey relationship
An interaction between two animals in which one of them hunts and feeds on the other organisms
Population
A group of organisms of the same species living together in the same area
Subsequent population
Population sizes of a species change over time, creating new populations with genetic variation
Ecosystem
All of the living and nonliving components in a specific area
Urbanization
The process of an area moving from rural (country) area to an urban (city) area
Biotic
The living things of an ecosystem
Adaptation
An inherited trait that increases an organism’s chance of surviving and reproducing in a particular environment
Consumer
An organism that cannot make its own food and gets energy by eating other organisms (has a mouth)
Biodiversity
The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem
Omnivore
An organism that feeds on meat and vegetation
Herbivore
An organism that feeds on vegetation
Carnivore
An organisms that feeds on meat
Tolerance
The range of conditions that an organisms can withstand
Parasitism
A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed
Producer-consumer relationship
An interaction where an animal consumes a plant to get energy
Species
A group of similar organisms that can breed with one another
Genetic variation
Differences in traits among organisms in the same population or species
Competition
The demand for resources, such as food, water, and shelter, in short supply in a community. (Organisms struggling with others for survival)
Symbiosis
A relation ship between 2 species.
