Vocabulary Flashcards
Intercellular Junctions
Structures that connect cell membranes
Tight Junction
Type of intercellular junction where the membranes of adjacent cells coverage and fuse.
Desmosome
Specialized junction between cells, which serves as a “spot weld.”
Gap Junction
Gap junctions form channels linking the cytoplasm of adjacent cells
Cilia
Microscopic, hair-like extensions of the exposed surface of most cells.
Microvilli
Tiny extensions of the cell membrane that absorb substances.
Keratin
Intracellular protein in epidermis, hair, and nails.
Exocrine gland
Gland that secretes it’s products into a duct or onto an outside body surface.
Endocrine Gland
Gland that secretes hormones directly into the blood.
Fibroblast
Cell that produce fibers in connective tissues.
Macrophage
Large phagocytic cell.
Serous Membrane
Membrane that lines a cavity without an opening to the outside of the body and covers the organs in these cavities.
Mucus Membrane
Membrane that lines cavities and tubes opening to the outside of the body.
Cutaneous membrane
Membrane is the extreme body covering commonly called skin.
Synovial Membrane
Membrane that forms the inner lining of the capsules of the freely movable joint.
