Corrupt Bargain -
scam between Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams to get Adams elected President; Jackson vows to run in 1828 as a result of this bargain.
Democratic Party -
created by Jackson when the Democratic-Republican party split, was supported by the “common man” in the southern states.
Spoils System -
deal in which Jackson gave government positions to unqualified friends and supporters.
Sectionalism -
loyalty to your region (North, South, or West) over loyalty to your country.
Battle of the Bank -
Jackson’s attack on the National bank; successful and all monies are moved to state banks.
Nullification Crisis -
South Carolina declares the right to nullify, or cancel, a federal tariff or other laws they did not want to follow.
Compromise Tariff -
created by Henry Clay to end the nullification crisis.
Henry Clay -
created the Compromise tax to end the Nullification Crisis; known as the Great Compromiser.
John C. Calhoun -
War Hawk; wanted to use Nullification to stop Protective Tariffs.
Indian Removal Act -
law passed in 1830 that required all Native Americans to move west of the Mississippi River.
Trail of Tears -
path that Native Americans were forced on to relocate to Oklahoma; 25% died along the way; caused by Manifest Destiny.
Worcester v. Georgia -
Supreme Court case; Cherokee Indians sued the state of Georgia for the right to stay on their lands; Cherokee win, but are still removed.
Suffrage -
the right to vote.
Whig Party -
a political party created in 1834 by people who opposed Andrew Jackson; Led by Henry Clay
Electoral College -
a group of people chosen from each U.S. state who meet to elect the President and Vice President of the U.S. based on the votes of all the people in each state.
