Exurbanization
People who move farther out into rural areas and work remotely
Satellite cities
An established town near a very large city that grows independently of the larger city (Ex: College Station- college tow, Galveston - shipping, cruises; both are independent satellite cities within Houston’s gravitational pull)
city-states
An urban center with surrounding territory and agricultural villages
urban hearths
Areas associated with river valleys (seasonal floods and fertile soils create a surplus)
Metropolitan/metro area
A collection of adjacent cities across which population density is high and continuous
Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)
A city of >50,000 people, the county it is located in, and adjacent counties with a high social/economical integration
Micropolitan Statistical Area
Cities of >10,000 but <50,000 people, the county it is in, and the surrounding counties with a high degree of integration
Nodal Region
A focal point in a matrix of connections (ex: Houston is the nodal region for aerospace)
Social Heterogeneity
the level of diversity among a group of people (factors such as language, cultural interests, etc.)
Time-space compression
The shrinking “time-distance” between locations due to improved transportation and communication; leads to urban growth
