Independent film
a film made outside of the Hollywood mainstream. Generally low-budget, and innovative in film making and narrative techniques.
Jump cut
an abrupt transition between shots that is deliberately disorienting in terms of spatial continuity. Used in the 1960s by film makers rebelling against the “seamless” style of classic Hollywood moviemaking.
Long shot
when the camera lens is focused on objects far in the distance.
Low angle shot
a shot in which the subject is photographed from below, tends to make the subject look powerful.
low-key lighting
a style of lighting, often found in film noir, suspense, or horror films, in which there is little fill light, resulting in a dark or shadow-filled image.
montage
a film sequence made up of a quick succession of brief shots, blending and dissolving into one another. Has the effect of compression action, time, or space.
