Vocab - Itona Flashcards
Obstreperous
Noisy, unruly
Obito was obstreperous in comparison to his calm and logical brother
Abstruse
Hard to comprehend
Hakuno found the situation completely abstruse
Quagmire
A difficult situation
Itona smirked, being in a quagmire, in both senses of the word, usually brought out new strengths so he wasn’t too panicked at the situation he was in
Indignation
Anger sparked by something unjust
Obito jumped in response to Daikoku’s version of the story, shouting in indignation, “…”
Idiosyncratic
Highly individualised/peculiar to one person
Kinkaku and Ginkaku stared in awe as the young child fought the seven ninja swordsmen; although he was only alive because of his idiosyncratic method of fighting, it was impressive that anyone, especially someone of his age, was able to fight well against the seven ninja swordsmen
Meretricious
Tastelessly showy (attractive with no value beneath the surface)
Itona rolled his eyes at the meretricious relationship. You didn’t even need any Dojutsu to see he was only with her for her riches and didn’t even really like her but nonetheless, she smiled and cuddled him like a couple that was deep in love.
It was so obvious to anyone with eyes. There were so many obvious hints that he was just a gold digger: he rolled his eyes at her when she wasn’t looking at him, his smiles drop off his face whenever she looks away from him, and he was extremely persistent about getting gifts from her. Didn’t she have any friends to point any of this out to her?
Polemic
An aggressive argument against a specific opinion (usually in a speech/written format)
Itona’s blood boiled at the polemic report about the dangers that the Uchiha brought to the village. With this level of ignorance, it must have been written by the second Hokage Tobirama Senju when he was still alive
Garrulous
Excessively talkative/wordy
Her garrulous personality didn’t affect his threat perception skills at all. As she talked, he filtered out any unnecessary details, which was almost half of the things she said, while also using his senses and Chakra sensory abilities to detect possible enemies
Seraphic
Angelic, sweet
As Obito began striking down with the Kunai to kill the enemy, she began to beg in a seraphic voice, “please don’t kill me, please! They’re forcing me to be here”
Intrepid
Brave in the face of danger
Itona showed everyone his intrepidity as he destroyed the barrier and charged at the man who had just been responsible for the third Hokage’s death
Sycophant
One who flatters for self-gain
Minato rolled his eyes and spoke with boredom, “I don’t need to be surrounded by sycophants. If this is an attempt to ingratiate yourselves with me, the centre of Konoha’s military force, it’s not working. Just tell me the mission.”
Effervescent
Bubbly, lively
The usually effervescent Rin, now with Kakashi’s hand through her heart, looked at the floor, full of dismay.
Ephemeral
Lasting for a very short time
His panic was ephemeral and he quickly analysed the situation and decided that the most exigent thing was preventing any fatal injury to Fuyura and averting any mobility-affecting injuries to himself
Pernicious
Extremely destructive/harmful gradually over time
Banto’s insects released a pernicious poison that shut down enemies’ chakra systems
Anachronism
Something that doesn’t fit in its time period
One would agree that it was made hundreds of years ago from its outward appearance and the items inside the house. Minato, however, picked up on one detail: the roof was made of Chakra concealing wooden panels, which had only been created a couple of weeks ago. This anachronism, along with Natsuno’s suspiciously pushy assurances that nobody knew about it confirmed one thing to Minato: This was a trap.
Inveterate
Long-established, unlikely to change feeling/habit
Gengetsu looked at Mu with disdain. His inveterate hostility towards the other Kage was formed by the constant comparisons he had received from the shinobi world between the two, in all of these, Mu had always been favoured.
Ruminate
To contemplate
Hiruzen ruminated the Third Kazekage’s proposal. Although there was no immediate danger to the leaf, it was a good offer and it was likely that the leaf would enter the war anyways.
“Lord Hokage, he’s awake!” Hiruzen’s aid said
Compunction
The distress caused by overwhelming guilt
Kakashi was full of compunction. He had one job. One job. Keep Rin safe. And he failed. The overwhelming emotions, along with the Chakra and physical exhaustion made Kakashi start to fall over, body deciding to shut down.
Proclivity
A strong inclination towards something
Itona noticed something unusual during their battle: Minato had a proclivity to close his eyes just after teleporting. Finally, a weakness to exploit.
Ingratiate
Bringing oneself into favour with someone by flattering or trying to please them
Minato rolled his eyes and spoke with boredom, “I don’t need to be surrounded by sycophants. If this is an attempt to ingratiate yourselves with the future Hokage, it’s not working. Just tell me the mission.”
Dogmatic
Inclined to lay down opinions as undeniably true
Itona scoffed and rolled his eyes then argued back with Minato in a dogmatic fashion, “I’m stronger than most Chunin and even some Jounin so not taking me to battle is just a stupid thing to do.”
Apathy
Lack of interest
“Listen to me, Itona. I know you’re gonna take this mission seriously anyway, but this mission is genuinely momentous.” Minato sternly addressed Itona.
Itona raised an eyebrow, unimpressed by Minato’s implication that he wouldn’t understand the gravity of the situation. He promptly responded in an apathetic tone, “yeah, Minato Sensei, duh. Kannabi allows the enemy to capitalise on aquaculture which allows them to support all of their forces. We’ve been training for a year, c’mon Sensei, you know I’m not stupid.”
Minato chuckled softly, “ok, I was just checking. I would consider you as… how do I phrase this…” Minato tilted his head up, eyes looking to the right as he thought. His mouth curled into a cheeky smile as he thought of the perfect wording, “I would consider you as not as intellectually advanced as I hoped you were because, if you were, you’d realise I was signalling to you to not do your usual risky manoeuvres.”
Itona rolled his eyes.
Ineffable
Too great or extreme to be expressed in words
It was just ineffable… Itona couldn’t believe the speed at which Minato was able to move. He really had been holding back whenever he was with Itona. This speed was basically godly.
In Itona’s thought process, which lasted less than five seconds, Minato had sped through approximately 1500 enemy Ninjas and slaughtered them all.
Minato, after slaughtering all the Shinobi, turned back around to look at Itona. His blue eyes were full of bloodlust. Itona shuddered. He had never seen the usually happy and funny Minato look so downright terrifying. Minato was a monster. Itona laughed at himself, why did he even ever think he was a genius that could be compared to this monster?
Discursive
Rambling, lacking order (ADHD-type beat)
Itona laughed as he noticed them all trying to comprehend Guy despite how discursive he was being.
Myopic
Lacking foresight (intellectually)
“Ugh, come on, Obito,” Itona scoffed, rolling his eyes, “you’re so myopic sometimes.”
Auspicious
conducive to success; favourable
“I have to act in the most auspicious way for this election,” Danzo complained, squinting his eyes, “if I’m not, either that damn Hiruzen or that arrogant Minato will win.”
Dither
To be unable to decide
Obito, dithering around, stood still, tears filling his eyes as he watched Rin and Kakashi take on enemies they couldn’t handle, taking lethal blows every few hits.
Specious
To be plausible in theory but to actually be wrong
Itona didn’t expect the strategy to work but, in his head, it was more than worth a try. Given the seemingly low-risk, high-reward situation, he began launching the soporific Genjutsu. Itona could not have been more mistaken. His idea, although specious, resulted in one of the worst possible outcomes.
Kinkaku, Ginkaku, Han, Roshi, and Kitsuchi all immediately noticed the presence of foreign Chakra and searched out the source immediately and prepared for battle. In the space of one second, Itona’s attempted Jutsu was noticed and ignored and he was located by several fearsome enemies.
Deleterious
Harmful/damaging
That strike. That damn strike. Deleterious in every way. Physically deleterious to Rin, mentally deleterious to Kakashi, emotionally deleterious to Rin’s family, and to Obito that one damn lightning blade was more than deleterious to him physically, mentally and emotionally. He’d never be the same. At least with Itona’s death, he wasn’t there to witness it. That one scene. That one scene of Kakashi standing there with his lightning blade thrust through Rin’s chest was engraved into his eye. He was, for the first time since waking up, glad that he only had one eye - having that scene engraved on both eyes would have been too much for him.
Loquacious
Being talkative
“Huh…” Itona started, taken aback by other information, “so was being loquacious an act too? To make me think you were foolish and gullible?”
Mutable
Able/liable to change
Minato smiled, he was mutable, after all, so he could learn something from Itona’s unique approach to the situation. His mutability was one of his most remarkable characteristics, both as a person and as a potential future Hokage
Resplendent
Attractive and impressive through being rich, colourful or sumptuous
Itona could immediately tell that the woman, Fuyuru, was wealthy. Fuyuru gracefully strolled forwards with a smooth and professional posture, head tilted up with each hand touching the other, but only at the fingertips. Her dress silky, diaphanous, glistening and beautiful, flowing behind her in the wind and making her resplendent. Itona smirked, she was definitely someone who was elite. Impressing her in the mission and having someone as prestigious as her could definitely not do any harm.
Astute
Having or showing an ability to accurately assess situations or people and turn this to one’s advantage
Jiraiya chuckled, these kids were promising, after all, “astute observation, Genma. Your guys’ case is completely foolproof. I still can’t bring Itona back into the academy but I’ll allow him to take the graduation exam. That should be enough, right?” Jiraiya asked. After receiving some tilted heads and confused looks, he explicated his point, “Itona will definitely pass the exam and, after that, he won’t need to come to the academy. He’ll pass the exam and be a qualified Ninja and everyone will be happy, right?”
Temerity
Excessive confidence or boldness; audacity.
Shisui smirked at Itona’s temerity. He wasn’t surprised that Itona was overly confident, Itona was being referred to as the new Fugkau, the new genius Uchiha. He was going to show itona, though. He was going to make a name for himself too.
Cogent
Clear, logical, and convincing
Jiraiya smirked, he was really impressed. He’d just be plain stubborn if he still decided to ban Itona from graduating after Obito’s cogent argument.
Rancour
Bitterness or resentfulness
As Itona felt his rancour rising, he noticed two things: his Sharingan was growing in strength, adding another tomoe to his eyes, and he could feel his inner fury bubbling, manifesting a physical form. He felt the anger, connected with it, and allowed it to consume him completely.
Imperturbable
Unable to be upset or excited; calm
Prattle
Talk at length in a foolish or inconsequential way
Itona ran away, unable to listen to Guy prattle on anymore
Esoteric
Intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with specialized knowledge or interest.
Itona attempted to learn the Jutsu but to no avail; it was esoteric for a reason, after all
Circumlocution
The use of many words where fewer would do, especially in a deliberate attempt to be vague or evasive.
He thought back to the current Hokage’s recent speech. When it came to the Uchiha clan, he seemed dismissive and was more than ready to move on from the subject. This was evidenced by his speedy, impassionate speaking, in conjunction with the significant drop in the amount of eye contact with the audience. The Hokage didn’t really care. Or that’s at least what it seemed like. Why did he even mention the Uchiha clan? Did he just want it to seem like he cared about the Uchiha clan? All the clan members who were watching were not impressed at all. Why did he even mention the clan if he didn’t care? He tended to sidestep his words during the speech, keeping his meanings vague through his circumlocution. Maybe he had not made a complete decision on what to do with the Uchiha clan. Itona wasn’t quite sure. All he knew for sure was that the first Hokage was completely supportive of the Uchiha clan and the second Hokage undermined the clan at every possible opportunity.
Sagacious
Having or showing keen mental discernment and good judgement; wise or shrewd
Desultory
lacking a plan, purpose, or enthusiasm.
Pusillanimous
showing a lack of courage or determination; timid.
Levity
The treatment of a serious matter with humour or lack of due respect
They all looked at Jiraya quizzically, baffled by his current levity which was dramatically different from his stern attitude a few seconds prior
Somnolent
Sleepy, drowsy
Malinger
To pretend to be ill/incapacitated to get out of duty/work
“Shut up, Obito, you’re such a malingerer,” Itona laughed, having to take a seat to not collapse.
Obito glared back at Itona, completely unimpressed at Itona’s reaction to him saying he was sick, “I don’t even know what that word means but this is not a laughing matter.”
Itona, after a few more moments of giggling, responded with a massive smirk on his face, “you’re sooooo faking, Obito.”
Obito side-eyed Itona. Ok, yes, he was faking to get out of…. but Itona should at least be supportive. He rolled his eyes before shouting in a whisper tone, “OK, YES I AM, but you should support me! At least go and tell people I’m actually sick!”
Intransigent
Refusing to compromise (usually over an extreme opinion)
Kirizu looked at the floor, his face dropping. He wasn’t surprised. Danzo was known as an intransigent individual. There was nothing he could do. This was hopeless. There was no chance of him winning against Danzo. Danzo wasn’t even listening to him at all. He couldn’t think of anything to say or do. Danzo simply outranked him.
Peripatetic
Wondering from place to place
Despite Fuyuru’s peripatetic nature, they managed to keep her safely within the confines of the camp, where she was fully protected.
Lachrymose
Easily brought to tears
???
Mendacious
Having a false, lying character
“Wow, we all knew you were mendacious but this is a bit extreme isn’t it, Natsuno,” Minato snickered
