seclude
to keep yourself/somebody away from contact with other people (The monks secluded themselves from the rest of society.)
abduction
the act of taking somebody away illegally, especially using force (child abduction)
ailing
ill and not improving (She looked after her ailing father.)
foul play
criminal or violent activity that causes somebody’s death (The police found no evidence of foul play.)
elude
to manage to avoid or escape from somebody/something, especially in a clever way (The two men managed to elude the police for six weeks.)
tow
to pull a car, boat, etc. behind another vehicle, using a rope or chain (Our car was towed away by the police.)
complacently
in a way that shows you are too satisfied with yourself or with a situation, so that you do not feel that any change is necessary
brief
to give somebody information about something so that they are prepared to deal with it
gravel
small stones, often used to make the surface of paths and roads
